    Need a Tax Deductible Donation?
The AAP-CA3, a non-profit 501(c)3 is able to accept book money for sites and provide a tax deductible receipt. Sites that do not have this non-profit status can have donors send a check to the AAP- CA3 indicating that this money should be set aside for a particular site. After purchasing books sites can send us an invoice which we will deduct from their account. Or sites can participate in bulk book buying with the collaborative and use the money in their account. There is no charge to sites for this service.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, CA Chapter 3 (AAP-CA3), under the leadership of Chapter President Donald Miller, Executive Director Meredith Kennedy, Associate Director Tara Milbrand, and ROR Champions within the Chapter, is the organizing agency for a coordinated Reach Out and Read effort in San Diego County. The RORSD Collaborative is working to help expand and sustain Reach out and Read in San Diego by recruiting new sites, providing support with progress reports and book inventory, sending out trainers for ROR training of new staff and physicians and assisting with and coordinating fundraising for book money. RORSD is continuing to expand in San Diego, reaching more children, with 40 active sites and several more applications in progress.< /td>

Bunny with bunny doctor Sustainability Books Sent from National ROR

As you know, National ROR is working to supply each site with 25% of the books needed for their program. Instead of awarding book funds to sites by means of a Scholastic account, National ROR is "stretching" their dollars and buying books in bulk for sites. Each site should have received a shipment of Scholastic books from National ROR.

    ROR in Haiti
A letter from Bron Anders, MD

Following the successes of ROR in the United States, programs are beginning to turn up around the world. The traditional model built around the wellchild check visits may be modified. The HIV clinic in Lesotho is giving out books with reading instructions. The Phillipine Pediatric Society has espoused the traditional model and is working on other models. Dr. Bron Anders recently returned from the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Haiti where there is a large in- patient unit for malnourished children. Programs are on-going to improve bonding with the mothers and children. Use of books seems like a logical extension of this program. Most of the parents were illiterate but they delighted in the reading material that we had, as long as it was somewhat culturally appropriate. We will be going down periodically to expand on these ideas. We will probably seek funding to buy Haitian Creole books down there. We might like to expand this outreach to the nutrition screening and aftercare clinics in the villages, run by outreach workers. If any of you have an interest in supporting this effort, e-mail to Bron Anders, banders@ucsd.edu .
