Online CME training | |
Reach Out and Read has developed a new training program for all Reach Out and Read Providers that incorporates video vignettes of experienced primary care providers working with their patients in the exam room into an interactive, informative training seminar. Our hope is that this material will be helpful both to new providers, who are just learning how to incorporate Reach Out and Read into their practices, and also to experienced Reach Out and Read primary care providers who may be looking for strategies that will help them improve their skills and find new ways to use books with their patients. Greetings!
Reach Out and Read San Diego has been busy this Fall. September started with a visit from Congresswoman Susan Davis at Family Health Center, Logan Heights and a celebration with Target for our work in the community along with book funding for several of our clinics. October brought us an organized book room courtesy of volunteers from Eli Lilly and Company as well as funding from Build a Bear, Las Patronas, and Kaiser Permanente. Thanks to Kaiser Permanente we currently have plenty of books, please contact us if your site is in need of books.
Reach Out and Read San Diego's Family Literacy Month Initiative has been a wonderful opportunity to focus on shared read aloud time and early literacy efforts in our community. See article below for more details.
As we end the year please consider making a tax deductible donation to continue providing books and literacy guidance to San Diego's most vulnerable children.
Happy Holidays,
Donald Miller, MD, MPH

Family Literacy Month
During the month of November RORSD has partnered with First 5 San Diego and the City and County Libraries to promote Family Literacy Month. 26 pediatric clinics are targeted to receive a visit from their library representative with book marks and prescription pads as well as a reminder for parents to visit their local library for more shared reading opportunities and a special gift. On November 8th, at the County Board of Supervisor's meeting, Pam Slater-Price presented RORSD with a proclamation for our work in early literacy and declared November as Family Literacy Month in San Diego. As part of this initiative look for PSAs running on Cox Communication. Click here to view PSA. |

Books, Books, and more Books
Reading is Fundamental
Books were shipped to RIF sites in June, thanks to a generous match by County Employees Charitable Organization (CECO) and at the beginning of November, thanks to a generous match from National Reach Out and Read. For this contract year, books will ship one more time in January.
Kaiser Permanente Community Benefit/Government Relations Book Donation and Book Funds
Kaiser Permanente shipped 2,600 books directly to 30 community clinics in San Diego. In addition, they donated $19,000 for books in the upcoming year.
Our RIF contract and generous donors continue to help us provide the pediatric clinics with over 50,000 books a year. Build-a-Bear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation provided $1,000 for books. The foundation is committed to making life more bearable for children, families and pets who are in need of a helping paw. With the sale of each Read Teddy- a special furry friend available in all Build-a-Bear Workshop stores- one dollar is donated to First Book and other literacy programs throughout the United States and Canada. Thank you!

Reach Out and Read Quality Improvement
MOC with American Board of Pediatrics
Deadline: November 30th
Many pediatricians have begun the process of renewing their American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) certification, which is now done through a somewhat complex but more broad-based process called Maintenance of Certification (MOC). Reach Out and Read worked the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the ABP to develop a Quality Improvement Project that has been approved by the American Board of Pediatrics (APB) for 25 Category IV Maintenance of Certification (MOC) points -- the maximum allowable number of points for a single QI project. Our project qualifies for 25 of the 40 points required for MOC. The module was designed to be accessible for both large groups that may have incorporated ROR into their practice as well as individual pediatricians who have ROR in their offices. Pediatricians can work together on the module through sharing of data and are "coached" through the process by trained staff. Projects will be initiated bi-annually and will continue to be offered until the needs of have our Reach Out and Read Programs and Providers have been met. The cost of the specific module is reasonable, and provides a mechanism to satisfy part of the MOC process while improving the quality of your ROR program in your office, clinic, or group practice. Reach Out and Read San Diego can help with the process, as needed. Click here for more information. Click here for a slideshow presentation regarding this MOC.
The goal of the QI Project is to help you improve two outcomes:
- The proportion of well-child visits at which a CHILD GETS A BOOK from his/her provider.
- The proportion of well-child visits at which a PARENT GETS A MESSAGE ABOUT READING from his/her child's provider.
