| Need a Tax Deductible Donation? |

The AAP-CA3, a non-profit 501(c)3 is able to accept book money for sites and provide a tax deductible receipt. Sites that do not have this non-profit status can have donors send a check to the AAP- CA3 indicating that this money should be set aside for a particular site. After purchasing books sites can send us an invoice which we will deduct from their account. Or sites can participate in bulk book buying with the collaborative and use the money in their account. There is no charge to sites for this service.

| The American Academy of Pediatrics, CA Chapter 3 (AAP-CA3), under the leadership of Chapter President Donald Miller, Executive Director Meredith Kennedy, Associate Director Tara Milbrand, and ROR Champions within the Chapter, is the organizing agency for a coordinated Reach Out and Read effort in San Diego County. The RORSD Collaborative is working to help expand and sustain Reach out and Read in San Diego by recruiting new sites, providing support with progress reports and book inventory,sending out trainers for ROR training of new staff and physicians and assisting with and coordinating fundraising for book money. RORSD is continuing to expand in San Diego, reaching more children, with 40 active sites and several more applications in progress.<

RORSD One Day Literacy Summit, March 21, 2009
Save the Date!
Thanks to a generous contribution by Kaiser
Permanente Reach Out and Read San Diego
Collaborative will
host a one day literacy conference on Saturday, March
21, 2009. The date was changed from March 28th
to March 21st. Physicians, coordinators,
volunteers, parents, and literacy advocates are
invited. This informative day will include topics on the
latest brain development research, reading to infants,
engaging children
in reading, fundraising, and legislative advocacy. CME
will be offered. More information coming soon or

Fall.

Congresswoman Davis Visits San Diego Family Care, Mid-City Community Clinic

Congresswoman Davis shares her love for reading
with
a visit to San Diego Family Care, Mid-City Community
Clinic. On
October 16
Family Health Center hosted
Congresswoman Susan Davis during a visit for the
Reach
Out and Read Program.
"When my boys were young, I began reading to them
at a very early age. Today, I take great joy in sharing
stories with my grandchildren. As a former member of
the San Diego School Board, I know that literacy is
fundamental to every child's education", said
Congresswoman Davis.

San Diego Family Care (SDFC) is a private not-for-
profit organization that serves more than 92,000
patients annually at 3 health centers in San Diego.
SDFC has provided quality comprehensive health
care for more than 30 years to our members of the
Linda Vista and Mid-City communities. The primary
focus of our organization, San Diego Family Care, is to
provide culturally competent, affordable, high-quality
medical and mental-health care, as well as, multi-
cultural health promotion, to people living in central
San Diego. All three SDFC clinic locations offer a
comprehensive array of services for patients

All participating Reading is Fundamental (RIF) sites
should have received books from Scholastic, Books 4
School, Rosen, and/or Macmillan. In addition emails
were sent to each site detailing the shipments. If you
did not receive these emails and/or shipments please
contact us right away. Your feedback on books is
always appreciated.

Barnes and Noble Book Fair
Contact your local Barnes and Noble Bookstore to
hold a bookfair to benefit your clinic. You promote the
event by passing out fliers. Then on select days a
percentage of every purchase will be given to your
clinic when accompanied with the flier.
Gift Wrapping at Barnes and Noble During the
Holidays Your volunteers pick a day and time to
gift wrap at Barnes and Noble. All proceeds benefit
your program. Programs that were recently awarded
funds from Target can request Target employees to
work as volunteer gift wrappers. Call your local
Barnes and Noble Bookstore to set up a gift wrapping
date today.
