ROR Training and Retraining Options
Training new providers and retraining as needed is
vital to ensure the quality of the Reach Out and Read
Program. There are several quick and convenient
training options listed below. Encourage new
providers to take the online CME course or order a
training DVD. For experienced providers tthere is a
second DVD available that you may consider showing
at a provider's meeting. Viewing the DVD at a monthly
conference or on one's own can refresh and revitalize
the practice of Reach Out and Read.
Training DVD for new providers
ROR National Center provides a DVD (also available
in VHS video format) that explains:
How to use the book in the exam room,
the importance of offering anticipatory parental
guidance on literacy issues.
Online CME Course
The CME online course is a convenient way of
learning about ROR in addition to providing the
medical provider with CME credit. The course is free,
open to everyone and can be taken only once.
Following successful completion of the course, MDs
and NPs receive a certificate by mail for 1 CME credit.
Please visit www.bu.edu/cme/ror
to access this training option.
Training for Experienced ROR Providers
ROR provides a second DVD, Pediatric Literacy
Intervention with Parents of Infants and Toddlers, for
clinicians who have had been practicing the Reach
Out and Read model and want additional strategies
for incorporating anticipatory literacy guidance into the
well-child visit.
For more information about Reach Out and Read
training options or materials, please contact training

Favorite Book of the Month- by Dr. Donald Miller
Sal Caracol
My favorite book for an infant is "Sal, Carcol" -- which
means "Saul, the Snail" - from the "deditos" series. It
is about a happy snail whose parents are also snails
(one is a sea snail and one is a river snail). I like the
way it rhymes and flows in Spanish, and the
illustrations are simple and bright. There is one
illustration of his father, the river snail, who is in the
water with snorkeling gear on. I always found that
amusing. His mother is the snail of "del mar", which
means "the ocean", but I always like how that might be
intepreted that she lives down coast highway from my
clinic in the real "Del Mar". The book is easy to read
and it seems very "San Diego". It is one of the books I
enjoy reading to infants and showing to them and their
parents. It is small enough for even the littlest hands.
