Need
a Tax Deductible
Donation? |
The
AAP-CA3, a non-profit 501(c)3 is able to accept book money for
sites and provide a tax deductible receipt. Sites that do not
have this non-profit status can have donors send a check to
the AAP- CA3 indicating that this money should be set aside
for a particular site. After purchasing books sites can send
us an invoice which we will deduct from their account. Or
sites can participate in bulk book buying with the
collaborative and use the money in their account. There is no
charge to sites for this
service. |

Making
a Difference in Kid's Lives
A
Local Pediatrician's Story
This
story comes from one of our local ROR
pediatricians:
I have been the pediatrician to a family of four children
since their first two children were babies. They are a
financially poor family but they value education greatly. They
are always reading while they wait to see me and tell me about
the great stories that they are reading when I come in. I love
to give them books at each of their well visits. At the last
well visit, their mom told me that they have a book shelf at
home with all of the books that I have given her children. She
told me that these book are a great source of pride to her and
her husband, because she and her children love to read but
would otherwise not be able to have a personal little library
of books. The oldest who is in kindergarten reads very well in
both English and Spanish and often proudly tells me that she
is going to be a doctor when she grows-up. It makes me happy
that I can play a small role in this family's love of
education and reading. |

Books
For North County
Provided
by Nordson Foundation
Sites
in North County, that were active
as of May 2007, should have received book shipments for
children 3-5 years old. Each site received a shipment from at
least 2 of the following publishers: All About Books, Jonathan
Dragon, and Scholastic (Bilingual Paperbacks). These books are
provided by a generous contribution from the Nordson
Foundation. If you have any feedback on the quality of these
books please let Tara know at

Two
Local Literacy Programs Earn The Acts of Caring
Award
The
San Diego County Library, LEARN program and the Laubach
Literacy Council of San Diego County
The
San Diego County Library, LEARN program and the Laubach
Literacy Council of San Diego County are two of 18 programs
selected by the National Association of Counties (NACo) as
winners in the 2008 Acts of Caring Awards.
The San
Diego County Library is one of only two libraries in the
country to be selected for an award.
These special
awards recognize the top county volunteer programs in the
country.
The partnership between the Library's adult
literacy program, L.E.A.R.N. (Libraries Empower All to Read
Now), and the Laubach Literacy Council of San Diego County,
results in training of volunteer tutors to teach English as a
Second Language (ESL) to adult immigrants and non-English
speakers in the County Library branches.
By the end of
its first year, 25 volunteer tutors were teaching 76 students
at six library branches. Three more branches added ESL
tutoring early this year.
The award ceremony will be
held April 10, 2008, on Capitol Hill in Washington,
D.C. |
