Need a Tax Deductible Donation?

The AAP-CA3, a non-profit 501(c)3 is able to accept book money for sites and provide a tax deductible receipt. Sites that do not have this non-profit status can have donors send a check to the AAP- CA3 indicating that this money should be set aside for a particular site. After purchasing books sites can send us an invoice which we will deduct from their account. Or sites can participate in bulk book buying with the collaborative and use the money in their account. There is no charge to sites for this service.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, CA Chapter 3 (AAP-CA3), under the leadership of Chapter President Donald Miller, Executive Director Meredith Kennedy, Associate Director Tara Milbrand, and ROR Champions within the Chapter, is the organizing agency for a coordinated Reach Out and Read effort in San Diego County. The RORSD Collaborative is working to help expand and sustain Reach out and Read in San Diego by recruiting new sites, providing support with progress reports and book inventory, sending out trainers for ROR training of new staff and physicians and assisting with and coordinating fundraising for book money. RORSD is continuing to expand in San Diego, reaching more children, with 40 active sites and several more applications in progress.

Pat Downs with the San Diego County Library

Thank you to Pat Downs, Youth Services Coordinator with the San Diego County Library for her engaging volunteer training. She reviewed several topics including the best practices for reading to children from birth through Kindergarten. She covered six skills for getting children ready for school that people who read to children should know. Do you know "The Big Six"?

  1. Print Motivation- make it interactive and fun
  2. Print Awareness- know how books work
  3. Vocabulary- Know specific words for ideas, feelings,
  4. Phonological Awareness- knowing the sounds that make up words
  5. Narrative Skills- open ended questions, repeat phrases, ask children questions, ask children questions

DCRORSD Visits Washington, DC

Each year, National ROR helps organize a special day in Washington DC, during which ROR advocates from around the country join together to educate our representatives in Congress about Reach Out and Read and the legislation that impacts its funding. We are glad to be represented this year by Dr. Bron Anders, as well as Roya Yasharpour, from California Reach out and Read. This year, the event was held on February 27th. Dr. Anders visited offices for all of the legislators in San Diego as well as going the extra mile to visit many other legislators from California. We thank Dr. Anders for her efforts and dedication. These contacts are important in making our representatives aware of the success of Reach out and Read, the hard work of the pediatricians who participate in Reach Out and Read, and the progress of our collaborative.
